The New Luxury Travel Equation: Why Fall, Wellness and Exclusivity Are Defining 2026
Our team is just back from spending a week in Las Vegas for Virtuoso Travel Week. Besides over 100 one on one meetings with our hotel, destination experts, and private aviation partners, one of my favorite parts of the conference are the data points that are revealed. These trends set the tone for the entire luxury travel industry, and offer more than interesting industry statistics. They provide useful clues about how to travel better, and when it may be worth planning ahead. So, let’s break down three that may impact how you plan your next vacation.
Over the past year I’ve noticed more than ever that for my clients, luxury travel is no longer simply about where you go or how much you spend. It is increasingly about when you travel, how the journey makes you feel, and whether the experience is truly worth your time. New data from Virtuoso, points to three particularly important shifts in luxury travel for the remainder of 2026: fall is emerging as the new peak season, wellness is becoming a primary reason to travel, and demand for the very best accommodations remains remarkably strong despite rising prices.
1. Fall Is Becoming the New Summer
For years, summer has been synonymous with European luxury travel. But Virtuoso's latest booking data suggests that the traditional high season is beginning to shift. If you were one of the travelers who had a Euro Summer, you may have come back feeling like next year you’d like to have a different kind of summer. If battling heat, crowds, and overwhelm is not your idea of fun or relaxation, there is good news to report.
September bookings through Virtuoso are up 72.5% in 2026, compared with 46.3% growth in 2025. October is also showing substantial momentum, while September is now pacing ahead of August. Fall is the new summer, and I have long been a proponent of fall travel and head to a new destination each September.
A September or October journey can offer many of the experiences associated with a summer escape while potentially delivering a more relaxed rhythm. Virtuoso's data shows particularly strong demand from American travelers for the U.S., Italy, France, Mexico and Japan, with Paris, the Amalfi Coast, the French Riviera, Tuscany and New York among the leading destinations.
There is another intriguing development: luxury travelers are increasingly combining multiple destinations rather than choosing just one. Virtuoso calls this “destination-maxxing,” with travelers pairing countries such as Italy and France in a single itinerary.
That makes fall particularly compelling for travelers who want to experience Europe at a more sophisticated pace, perhaps combining Paris and the French Riviera, or Tuscany with the Amalfi Coast, rather than limiting a journey to a single destination.
The Perspectives Travel takeaway: If you have traditionally reserved Europe for June through August, it may be time to reconsider the calendar. The most desirable fall dates and accommodations are becoming highly sought-after, making advance planning increasingly important.
2. Wellness Has Moved From Amenity to Motivation
Luxury wellness has also evolved. It is no longer simply about booking a hotel with a beautiful spa or adding a massage to an otherwise traditional vacation. According to Virtuoso data, one in four global luxury travelers now identifies health and wellness as the primary reason for a trip. Wellness-focused hotels are also outperforming the broader market, with bookings up 28%.
Perhaps more revealing is the direction wellness itself is taking. The sleep-focused retreats that dominated the conversation in 2025 are giving way to longevity escapes—trips designed around longer-term health, vitality and well-being.
For today's luxury traveler, that could mean choosing a destination specifically for its wellness expertise, building preventative health services into a European escape, or selecting a resort where fitness, nutrition, recovery and longevity are integral to the experience rather than simply available as spa treatments.
This is also where thoughtful planning becomes particularly valuable. The world's most compelling wellness properties are not interchangeable. Some specialize in longevity and diagnostics; others focus on movement, nutrition, sleep, mindfulness or recovery. The right choice depends on what you actually want to accomplish during your time away.
The Perspectives Travel takeaway: Wellness travel is becoming more sophisticated—and the best experience is less about having a spa and more about finding the right expertise for your personal goals.
3. The Luxury Traveler Is Still Spending, But Wants the Best
Perhaps the most significant finding for travelers at the highest end of the market is that rising hotel rates have not meaningfully diminished demand.
Virtuoso reports that hotel bookings are up 24.5% in 2026. Even more striking, bookings for hotels with average daily rates of $1,500 or more are growing 37%, more than twice as quickly as lower-priced hotel bookings. The numbers illustrate just how dramatically the luxury hotel market has changed. Virtuoso reports that the average domestic luxury hotel rate has risen from $790 in 2019 to $1,445 today, while international luxury hotel average daily rate has increased from $985 to $1,653.
And yes, even with the rate increasing our clients continue to book more hotels every year. According to Virtuoso executives, high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth travelers behave differently from the broader market. They increasingly prioritize experiences, authenticity and access, and they are willing to pay for the accommodations and experiences they consider worth it.
The Perspectives Travel takeaway: For anyone seeking a specific suite, villa or ultra-luxury room category because scarcity matters. Virtuoso reports that bookings one to two years in advance are up approximately 50%, with big-ticket trips increasingly being booked earlier because they involve more planning and more moving parts. At the highest end of the market, the better strategy can be securing the right property, room category and dates before inventory becomes constrained.
The Value of Expertise Is Increasing Alongside the Price of Travel
As luxury travel becomes more expensive and more competitive, simply finding a hotel is no longer the difficult part. The challenge is knowing which hotel, which room, which season, which experience and which opportunities are actually worth your time and investment.
As a luxury travel advisor my role is to identify the properties that best fit your priorities, recommend alternative dates when they create a meaningfully better experience, secure preferred-partner benefits when available, and coordinate the many moving parts of a complex itinerary.
This becomes particularly important when traveling during the increasingly popular fall season, planning a wellness-focused escape or seeking limited inventory at the world's most coveted hotels. The latest Virtuoso data ultimately points to a luxury traveler who is less interested in traveling simply because they can, and more interested in traveling exceptionally well. And that’s what Perspectives Travel does best.
The new luxury is not simply having more. It is knowing what is worth having, and having someone who knows how to make it happen. Reach out to Perspectives Travel when you’re ready to have the expertise needed to elevate your next getaway.
