There are grand resorts with extensive facilities, discreet seaside hotels where the greatest indulgence is privacy, historic properties steeped in Hollywood and literary lore, and laid-back hideaways where a barefoot afternoon can feel considerably more sophisticated than it sounds.
For travelers accustomed to exceptional hotels, the question is not whether Jamaica can deliver a luxury experience (it can). The more interesting question is which version of Jamaica is right for you?

Set on a secluded peninsula near Montego Bay, Round Hill has been part of Jamaica's luxury landscape since 1953. Its history is unusually glamorous: the resort has welcomed presidents, artists, filmmakers and cultural icons, and its connection to Ralph Lauren has helped preserve the property's unmistakable aesthetic. And while Mr. Lauren never puts his villa in the rental pool, you can stay in the same villa where JFK Jr. and Jackie Kennedy honeymooned.
Round Hill does not feel as though it was designed to impress you the moment you arrive. Instead, the luxury reveals itself gradually, in the architecture, the service, the setting, the sense of privacy and the details that have become traditions.
The accommodation choice is particularly important here. The Pineapple House rooms, with Ralph Lauren-designed interiors and ocean views, are ideal for couples who want the classic Round Hill experience. But for families or groups, the private villas are where the resort becomes something altogether different. Villas range from two to six bedrooms and offer a more residential experience, with dedicated staff and a sense of having your own Jamaican estate.
Round Hill combines sophisticated surroundings with an unusually strong family offering, including children's programming, water sports, tennis, fitness and other activities. Its current program includes complimentary kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkeling, while the resort also offers dedicated children's clubs.
For adults, the experience is considerably more refined than the phrase "family-friendly resort" might suggest. There is a spa housed in a restored 18th-century mansion, an oceanfront setting, a Moet and Chandon adults only beach experience, excellent dining and the kind of service that makes a longer stay particularly easy.

If Round Hill is about refinement and intimacy, Half Moon is about breadth. The 400-acre property outside Montego Bay is almost a destination unto itself, stretching along two miles of beautiful Sargassum free beachfront. But beyond the beach, there’s a long list of facilities including a Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed 18-hole golf course (with an unexpected route to get there), 11 tennis courts, an equestrian center and the expansive Fern Tree Spa.
This is the hotel I would recommend to someone who says: "I want a beautiful beach, but I don't want to spend my entire vacation sitting on it."
Half Moon has the space and infrastructure to make that possible. You can play golf in the morning, ride horses, book a spa treatment, play tennis or picklelball, take advantage of the beach, explore the resort's restaurants and still have plenty left to discover. For families, the property is particularly attractive because it combines the amenities of a large resort with a setting that still feels distinctly Jamaican. The kids club can be visited independently or children can enjoy programming while their parents relax, for a fee.
Choose Half Moon if:
You want the widest selection of activities.
Golf, tennis, horseback riding or wellness are important to your vacation.
You are traveling with children or teenagers.
You prefer a larger resort with multiple dining and activity options.
You want to combine relaxation with an active itinerary without leaving the property.
Who we book this for the most:
Out of the four properties we experienced, Half Moon felt more like a complete resort destination than a boutique hideaway. So, it is especially well suited to families who don't necessarily want everyone doing the same thing all day. One person can be on the golf course, another at the spa, children can participate in activities and everyone can reconvene for dinner. And speaking of dinner, we always make sure our clients are there on a Friday night so they can experience the iconic Friday night beach BBQ.

Jamaica Inn: For the Romantic Who Values Privacy
Then there is Jamaica Inn. If the thought of a 400-acre resort sounds excessive, and the idea of spending your vacation somewhere intimate, discreet and deeply romantic sounds much more appealing, Jamaica Inn may be the most natural choice.
The hotel opened in 1950 and quickly became known for discreet service and understated elegance, attracting Hollywood names including Marilyn Monroe and Katharine Hepburn. That atmosphere has survived and the property has an easy island glamour, centered around a private beach and just a small collection of accommodations. It’s a favorite for Jamaicans who want a staycation, and that says a lot given that locals have so many luxury resorts to choose from.
This is not a resort where you come because you need endless choices. You come to Round Hill because you want simplicity in the best way possible. The rooms and suites emphasize sea views, private outdoor living space and a feeling of separation from the rest of the world. Some cottages add private plunge pools and outdoor showers. There are no televisions or radios in the classic accommodations, a deliberate decision that feels increasingly luxurious in a world where being unreachable has become a privilege.
The hotel's private beach is a major part of the appeal, as is the intimate atmosphere. There is also the Ocean Spa, positioned on the cliffs, and an open-air restaurant beneath the palms where Caribbean cuisine becomes part of the overall sense of place. Don’t miss the pizzas which are handmade on the beach and finished in an open air pizza oven.
Jamaica Inn is the property I would have at the top of the list for a honeymoon, anniversary or sophisticated couples' escape. Guests must be 10 years or older to stay on property, so it lends itself to a more adult oriented crowd. It is also worth considering for a traveler who has stayed at the larger Caribbean resorts and is looking for something more personal on the next trip.
Choose Jamaica Inn if:
Privacy is more important than an extensive list of amenities.
You are planning a honeymoon, anniversary or romantic escape.
You love historic hotels with personality.
You want an intimate, service-driven experience.
Your ideal vacation involves reading, swimming, dining and doing considerably less.

GoldenEye: For the Traveler Who Wants the Story
And last but not least, a property that has been on my list to experience since I founded Perspectives Travel. GoldenEye is the most difficult of the four to compare because it is less a traditional luxury resort than a piece of Jamaican cultural history that happens to be a remarkable place to stay.
This is where Ian Fleming created James Bond. Fleming purchased the property in 1946 and wrote all thirteen James Bond novels during his stays in Jamaica. Later, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell acquired and expanded the property, transforming the original estate into a collection of cottages, huts and villas spread across the tropical grounds. The history is fascinating, but the reason to stay at GoldenEye isn't simply to say you've slept where Ian Fleming once lived. It is the sense of place.
GoldenEye sits in Oracabessa on Jamaica's northeastern coast, away from the concentration of large resorts around Montego Bay. It’s so discrete that our driver missed the entrance, twice! Once you enter the gated grounds, you’ll notice that rather than a conventional hotel tower, GoldenEye offers beach huts, lagoon cottages and villas, including substantial multi-bedroom options. The Beach Villas, for example, offer kitchens, private outdoor dining and direct beach access.
And the experiences are wonderfully tied to the setting: kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding, fishing, spa treatments and dining that makes use of Jamaican ingredients and flavors. If you’ve ever wanted to kayak to your spa appointment, then this is the property for you.
GoldenEye is quintessential quiet luxury. It is luxury without looking particularly interested in being "luxury.” Stay here when you’ve checked all of the must visit hotels off your list and want something that feels comfortable and relaxed. GoldenEye feels the way the Caribbean felt before mega resorts and Instagram photo ops. That distinction matters when your time is your biggest asset and want to return home from your vacation feeling like you actually had a vacation.
Choose GoldenEye if:
You value character and authenticity over formality.
You love design, music, literature or cultural history.
You want a more secluded, independent-feeling Jamaican experience.
A private villa or beach hut sounds more appealing than a traditional hotel room.
